1 Context Overview
Chapters thirteen to twenty-seven of Isaiah deliver oracles from the Lord to various nations, principally to Babylon who will rise up to crush Judah and destroy Jerusalem. Isaiah warns all these nations that God is over them and will take away their glory because of their sins. After delivering these oracles to particular nations, Isaiah then looks to the much more distant future, to the destruction of the whole world.
2 Oracles to Kingdoms (Isaiah 15-19)
- Philistia (of the Philistines) along the coastal plains wishes to be an ally of Judah against Assyria, but these old foes of Judah are doomed and their messengers will be told "The Lord has founded Zion" (Isaiah 14:28-32).
- Moab is going to be destroyed by Assyria too. Moab’s pride leads to its downfall. God is compassionate to Moab and Judah is to accept the refugees into the kingdom (Isaiah 15-16). Note that Ruth David's great grandmother, was a Moabite.
- Damascus and Ephraim (Syria and Israel) are going to fall to the Assyrians (Isaiah 17). Israel made an ally of Syria and together they attacked Judah. Ephraim was Israel’s main tribe. It was descended from Joseph. Damascus is Syria’s capital city.
- Ethiopia also known as Cush, is a distant and powerful nation, yet even it will feel the blade of Assyria. Ethiopia will see Mount Zion (Jerusalem) stand, and send a gift of homage to its God the Lord of hosts (Isaiah 18).
- Egypt is idolatrous and will not escape the Lord’s hand (Isaiah 19:1)..
- There will be civil wars (Isaiah 19:2).
- The demoralized people will resort to the occult for help (Isaiah 19:3).
- Egypt will be conquered by Assyria (Isaiah 19:4).
- The normal refreshing of the Nile will fail (Isaiah 19:5-7).
- Industry along the Nile will be in ruin (Isaiah 19:8-10).
- The princes of Zoan and Memphis (capital cities) will be deluded fools, heeding stupid advice, leading Egypt astray (Isaiah 19:11-15).
- Egypt will be afraid of Judah (Isaiah 19:16-17).
- Egypt’s great cities, even the City of the Sun, will turn to worshipping the Lord and he will send them a Saviour (Isaiah 19:18-21).
- The Lord’s purpose in striking Egypt is to heal, not destroy (Isaiah 19:22).
- A day is coming when Israel, Egypt, and Assyria, (Jew and Gentile) will all be united and blessed together as God’s people (Isaiah 19:23-25).
