1 Context Overview
The first twelve chapters of Isaiah tell us about Isaiah’s purpose in writing the book and his calling to be a prophet. They predict and lament the eventual fall of Jerusalem. However the arm of the Lord will protect Judah from the Assyrians who will destroy Israel and later itself be destroyed. Isaiah looks beyond all these things to the coming of Christ and his glorious kingdom.

The Three Words of Isaiah
Isaiah chapter 6 is a mixture of narrative and poetry, as Isaiah describes his awesome vision of calling. There are three words of Isaiah which he utters in the presence of the Lord. Each statement is introduced with "Then I said..."
- 1. Woe is me, for I am ruined! (Isaiah 6:5),
- 2. Here am I, send me! (Isaiah 6:8),
- 3. Lord, how long? (Isaiah 6:11).
4 The Assyrian Invasion (Isaiah 7-8)
- Israel attacks Judah without success (Isaiah 7:1).
- God sends Isaiah to encourage Ahaz king of Judah (Isaiah 7:1-9).
- Ahaz offends God by refusing to ask for a sign (Isaiah 7:10-13).
- A sign is given, the sign of a son. Soon coming destruction of Israel foretold (Isaiah 7:14-16).
- Assyria to oppress Judah. Judah to experience hardship and decline. (Isaiah 7:18-25).
- Isaiah’s son is born and significantly named (Isaiah 8:1-3).
- Soon coming destruction of Israel and attack on Judah foretold again (Isaiah 8:4-10).
- God exhorts Isaiah not to stumble (Isaiah 8:11-15)
- Isaiah and his disciples look to the law and to the testimony, not to dark pagan practices. (Isaiah 8:16-22).
