Sermons in the Bible
—A simple list

Old Testament

  • Moses: he spoke these words before his death on Mount Nebo and before the Israelites crossed the Jordan into the promised land (Deuteronomy ch 32).
  • Joshua: as an old man, near to death, he makes two speeches to the Israelites about faithfulness in their new land (Joshua ch 23 & 24).
  • Nathan: his simple parable convicts David of his sin in taking Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife (2Samuel 12:1-15).
  • Ezekiel: He conveys a message from the LORD to the prophets, about the idols in their hearts (Ezekiel ch 13 & 14).
  • Levites: In a solemn assembly, in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah, a discourse is delivered in the form of a prayer confessing sin (Nehemiah ch 9).

New Testament

  • John: the Baptizer, the voice crying in the wilderness (Matthew 3:1-12).
  • Jesus: Sermon on the Mount, the beatitudes and other teaching (Matthew ch 5-7).
  • Jesus: Sermon on the Plain, at the bottom of the mountain where he had spent the night in prayer (Luke 6:17–49).
  • Jesus: Discourse to Nicodemus (John 3:1-21).
  • Jesus: He sends out the 12 disciples to preach (Matthew ch 10).
  • Jesus: What defiles a man, is what comes out of his heart (Mark 7:1-23).
  • Jesus: A discourse in parables about the kingdom of Heaven (Matthew ch 13).
  • Jesus: A condemnation of the Scribes and Pharisees (Matthew ch 23).
  • Jesus: A discourse on the destruction of Jerusalem and the second coming of Christ.(Matthew ch 24).
  • Jesus: Teaching on the coming Judgment day (Matthew ch 25).
  • Jesus: At the Passover with his disciples, on the night he was betrayed (John ch 14-18).
  • Peter: on the day of Pentecost after Jesus was raised from the dead, Peter preaches that Jesus is Lord and Messiah (Acts ch 2).
  • Peter: He preached again after he and John healed a man lame from birth. He also spoke the next day before the Sanhedrin (Acts 3:11-26, 4:8-12).
  • Peter: preaches to Cornelius and his household (Acts 10:34-48).
  • Stephen: preaches before being stoned to death (Acts ch 7).
  • Paul: in the synagogue at Antioch of Pisidia (Acts 13:14-48).
  • Paul: to the philosophers at the Areopagus in Athens (Acts 17:15-34).
  • Paul: to the elders from Ephesus as he departs for Jerusalem (Acts 20:17-38).
  • Paul: at Jerusalem to the angry mob (Acts 22:1-23).
  • Paul: being judged in Caesarea by Felix the governor (Acts 24:10-22).
  • Paul: being judged in Caesarea by king Agrippa and Porcius Festus successor to Felix (Acts 26:1-23).
  • John: An Angel speaks to him after all the visions he saw. Jesus himself also speaks briefly. John faithfully records the message for us (Revelation 22:7-21).
